How to Create a Discussion Board

Overview

One of the most popular tools used for courses on Blackboard is the discussion board. The Discussion Board allows students to have thoughtful discussions by posting and responding to previous questions. As a faculty member, you can observe and guide discussions by creating discussion topics, commonly referred to as forums. 

Instructions

• • Sign in into your Blackboard course - https://learn.mssm.edu

  • From the left navigation menu, click the Plus Symbol and select Tool Link

• • Enter Discussion Board in the name field, and select Discussion Board from the type dropdown menu

  • Make sure the Available to Users option is checked

• • Click Submit

Create a Forum

A forum is an area inside the discussion board where students discuss topics or group of related topics.  

• • Select the Discussion Board tool link created earlier, and click Create Forum

• • Provide a name for the Forum and click Submit

  • Forum availability and settings can be adjusted as needed.

• • On the main Discussion Board page, students will be able to access the collection of Forums created

Create a Thread

• • Within each forum, students can create and contribute to discussion threads. To create a thread, select the forum created earlier, then click Create Thread

• Provide a name for the Thread and click Submit
